Equine Sports Massage

Why Does my Horse need a Sports Massage?

Horses are incredible athletes, whether they’re competing at top levels or enjoying leisurely hacks. Like humans, they can develop muscular tension, stiffness, or soreness from their daily routines.

Sports massage helps release tightness, improve movement, and keep your horse feeling their best.

Did you know it can take up to 90 days for the effects of muscular micro-damage to become noticeable in horses?

Subtle strains or imbalances might not show immediate signs but can develop into stiffness, reduced performance, or behavioural changes over time if left unaddressed.

This is why regular Sports Massage is important for your horse. By identifying and addressing tension or micro-damage early, sports massage helps keep your horse comfortable, supple, and performing at their best, while also reducing the risk of long term issues.

Signs your horse may show when they need a sports massage:

  • Reluctance to bend evenly on both reins or hold a consistent outline.
  • Feeling “flat” or less enthusiastic during work.
  • Uneven muscle development or tightness in specific areas.
  • Resistance to transistions or lateral movements.
  • A drop in performance or difficulty maintaining previous levels of work.
  • Struggling to pick up or maintain the correct canter lead.
  • Becoming fussier than usual when being groomed, tacked up, or rugged.
  • Stiffness or reduced flexibility after harder work or rest days.

These signs could indicate mild muscular tension or imbalances. Regular sports massage can help address these issues, improving your horse’s comfort, performance, and overall well-being.

Important note: While Sports massage is an effective tool for relieving muscle tension, improving flexibility and enhancing performance. Sports massage is not a replacement for veterinary care. If your horse is showing signs of injury, illness, lameness or pain. It is important to consult with your vet for a diagnosis and treatment plan.

If your horse is currently under veterinary treatment, I will need to obtain permission from your vet before providing sports massage. This ensures that the treatment complements their ongoing care and supports your horse’s recovery effectively.
